Charley Hafiz in her own words……
I am the founder and Managing Director of Charley Bow Ltd, a Shoe Party business that gives women the opportunity to become an Agent, selling shoes through parties and online. I manage the brand itself and recruit Agents to expand our team of Bows through targeted marketing online.
What was your first job?
First job ever was at BP! Great company to work for and good experience of managing a job and being at Uni! First career (real job!) was as a Business Studies Secondary School Teacher.
When did you know that you wanted to run your own business?
As a teacher I specialised in enterprise and encouraging students to start their own businesses. This is when I knew that I wanted to do just that myself. I have such a passion for entrepreneurship I wanted to also pass that on to others by helping them become their own boss too.
Were there any barriers you faced – particularly as a woman?
As a woman, I would say no! But maybe I’m blind to it as I don’t look for it. My target market is women but I regularly attend networking sessions and events, pitching my business to men as well. I’m running a normal business and although my target market is gender specific, my business model and marketing techniques are universal.
Why did you set up Charley Bow?
Originally I set up Charley Bow to help pay for our wedding! We needed another income to get things moving and organised just that little bit faster! But I’m also the kind of person who can’t sit still – I don’t do free time! Once my husband and I got married I carried on for a while but we decided we wanted to start a family so I went back to concentrating on teaching and closed the business.
Then we had our son and when I was on maternity leave I knew I couldn’t go back to working and leave him with someone else. I started Charley Bow up again as I strongly believed I’d been onto something and the nagging feeling that I’d hit on something had stayed with me ever since I stopped.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Time! Balancing a variety of jobs, with a toddler and now being pregnant again has definitely been a challenge! But I’m a very determined person and nothing will stop me reach a goal once I set my mind to it.
What has been your most memorable moment?
Any time that someone says I have inspired them to start a business, or we’ve recruited a new Agent. That was always the goal and always will be.
What would your top tip be for women starting out in business?
Do it! Take the risk but do your research. Trust your gut feelings and just go for it. You’ll regret it if you don’t.
What would you most like to change in the world?
Every woman should have a shoe wardrobe! And they should all be heels!
What do you do to relax?
Work! I love to learn and so I’m constantly researching and reading; anything from ‘craft activities for a 2 year old’ to ‘how to increase your blog readership’. I’m a working Mom and want my children to see that, be inspired by it and understand the value of working hard to achieve your ambitions.
